Sydney Staples: Hello and welcome to the NCC News Podcast. We’re your hosts, Sydney Staples..
Jailah Pettis: And Jailah Pettis. Today is Thursday, June 15th of 2023 and here are some of the stories we’re following today at NCC News.
Staples: Two chemotherapy drugs are in incredibly short supply… forcing doctors to ration care and patients to drive longer distances to get treatment. Our reporter Kennedy Houston is speaking with supply chain manager to learn more about how and why the shortage happened in the first place.
Pettis: And our reporter Cole Kirst is at the annual New York state blues festival… the free… three day event kicks off today.
Staples: Joining us now is our first guest, Karl Winter. Karl, the school year is winding down, but we’ve got some news on what’s to come for the next. What can you tell us?
Karl Winter: “Syracuse City School District announced last month that it will be moving start times earlier for next school year. So middle and high schools in the district are gonna start at 7:25 AM in 2023-2024, which is 25 minutes earlier for the high schools, 20 minutes earlier for the middle schools. And basically we’ve seen community outcry from parents, students, medical experts alike saying this is the wrong decision. Because there’s research that shows that adolescents and teenagers need more sleep than what they’re getting when school starts at 7:25 AM So some parents are petitioning against this, trying to get it changed. The school district says they have to do this because of the best bus schedules. So we’ll see if the outcry from the community has any impact”.
Staples: Thank you Karl. Now turning to a way that local student-athletes can stay sharp through out this summer.
Pettis: we have another guest, Andrew Macbeath, with us today. Andrew, you reported on Syracuse lacrosse this past spring, what are some of those players up to this offseason?
Andrew Macbeath: “College lacrosse players from across Central New York, whether they go to Colgate, Syracuse, or Lemoyne or other places, they definitely want to continue playing the sport they love, even when they’re out of season. So Syracuse has decided to continue their season by holding a rec league during the summer. So a lot of these lacrosse players will come back and continue to hone their skills and keep the connections going especially with Jake Moran”.
Jake Maron: “We all went like division 1, you know, everyone is doing their own thing but then we all come back here to play on the same team or a different team and it was good to see the guys, you know, come here, seeing how much better or worse they’ve gotten, but you know we are all just out here to have fun.”
Pettis: Thanks Andrew.
Staples: That’s all for now…. For additional information on these stories and more… be sure to check out the NCC News online website.
