New Development, Nexton, Is Growing Nexton Is Growing

8,000 homes have been approved to be built in the 5,000-acre community.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (NCC News) — The sound of hammers and nails are familiar to residents in Summerville, South Carolina. Nexton, an ever-growing, master-planned community in Berkeley County is leading this growth. Homes are selling quicker than they are being built, and the development is attracting people not only from out of state, but also long time local residents like Terry McEvoy.

“It just felt secluded,” McEvoy said. “It felt like a little town of its own. It has amenities with shopping and restaurants and stuff like that. And it just seemed like a place where my daughter and I could make a home again.”

McEvoy recently left her home of over 20 years in a nearby older master-planned community. Nexton has shopping, dining, schools and businesses. It is in close proximity to Interstate 26 as well.

“I think there is something here for everyone,” McEvoy said. “You know, for me – someone who wanted to downsize and live a little bit of a simpler life – apartment living meets my needs right now. But you can buy a condo down the street for $300,000 or you can go to the next development over and buy a $750,000 house.”

According to development plans released by Nexton, over 8,000 new homes and 2,000 multi-family units such as apartment complexes have been approved to be built in the nearly 5,000-acre master-planned community.

The future of Nexton remains big. More homes, restaurants and businesses are on the way – and that all means more adventures for Nexton residents.

“I see all kinds of people, families riding around on golf carts – you know it’s family time,” McEvoy said. “It’s not like let’s get in the car and go to the store but let’s get in the golf cart and make it an adventure. And like that brings a smile to my face.”
