SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — This summer, the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University underwent more than $118 million in renovations, the largest change to the Dome since its creation in 1980. There were tons of changes made to the stadium, with some of the notable ones being a new roof yes it is no longer just a giant bubble, a center-hung scoreboard, and LED lights.
Due to New York State and Syracuse University’s COVID-19 protocols, no fans were given the chance to see the new amenities in person. However, the football team and media got an in person look inside the updated Carrier Dome and weren’t disappointed.
“We got a chance to see it Thursday morning. . . It was about 5:45 in the morning when we were in there and it was nothing but wow’s from me and all the players,” said head coach Dino Babers.
The most visible attraction is the scoreboard/video board that hangs overs midfield. Syracuse University states that it’s the second-largest indoor center-hung system in the United States and the third-largest indoor center-hung system in North America.
The scoreboard contains a massive video screen utilized for pregame hype videos, as well as instant replays. It also includes an updates sound system and LED lights.
“It’s a much needed update, and I think it makes a statement that Syracuse intends to be big time in college sports for the foreseeable future,” said faculty athletic representative Rick Burton.
Burton was in the Carrier Dome for the Syracuse Football team’s home opener Sunday against Georgia Tech.
“The scoreboard is kind of NFL quality. The clarity of the picture is just amazing. It’s massive. You can look both at the screen and under the screen, there are multiple settings. I think by the time fans get in there, they’re going to say, ‘Oh my goodness,” said Burton.
Although the Dome can be used for games at the moment, the renovations are not complete. They are still working on improving the internet connection and air-conditioning aspect of the venue.
