By Alyssa Lyons SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)— New York State and local candidates will now be able to use campaign funds for child care costs.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation amending the previous state law to allow campaign funds to be used for child care expenses that incurred during office.
While the bill was created to help working parents, the legislation aims to enable mothers to pursue public office in hopes that legislators will begin to look more like the communities they represent.
The new measure comes after Cuomo’s 2018 launch of the Child Care Availability Task Force, a part of the Women’s Agenda, improving the access to quality and affordable child care in New York.
According to the Center of American Women and Politics, 33 % of New York State’s Executive and Legislative officials are women, compared to the 29 % average nationally.
The new law’s provisions take effect in 60 days, and will be applied to this year’s election.
