By Chiann Nobrega SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – A New York congressman is supporting equal pay for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team.
Congressman Joe Morelle announced on July 27 that he is co-sponsoring legislation that will cut funding for the men’s world cup until the women’s team receives fair and equal pay. Blocking the federal funding will affect the 2026 Men’s World Cup that the U.S. is set to co-host with Canada and Mexico.
The new legislation is called “Give Our Athletes Level Salaries,” also known as the GOALS Act. Morelle is one of 69 co-sponsors for the bill.
Equal pay has been a topic of discussion in soccer since the women’s team won the World Cup in 2015. Several high profile athletes such as Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe have been highly vocal about the wage gaps. In 2016 Morgan, Rapinoe and three other teammates filed a complaint against the United States Soccer Federation.
