Steve Ammerman: A deal with Mexico and Canada on this new USMCA trade deal is definitely movement in the right direction for New York agriculture particularly for dairy farmers.

Michael Hegarty: High tariffs are still placed on the products, so Ammerman hopes for those to be lowered as well in the near future.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)— New York farmers will soon be able to send more milk, cheese and other dairy products to Canada.

Canada and the U.S. agreed on a new trade deal, which will allow New York dairy farmers, and other American farmers, to tap into up to 4 percent of the Canadian dairy market, according to Steve Ammerman of the New York Farm Bureau.

Ammerman is hopeful for the future for New York dairy farmers after the countries reached the agreement.

“A deal with Mexico and Canada on this new USMCA, (United States Mexico Canada Agreement), trade deal is definitely movement in the right direction for New York agriculture, particularly for dairy farmers,” Ammerman said.

The deal eliminates a pricing system that hurt American farmers, but Ammerman said he would like to try and ensure that loopholes will not be implemented that will undercut American farmers.

High tariffs are still being levied on these exported dairy products in the new deal, so Ammerman wants to see them reduced as discussions about the new agreement continue.
