New York Residents Warned of Increases in Heating Costs This Winter

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — National Fuel and  National Grid continued to warn New York state customers of a significant increase in heating costs coming this winter. These utility companies estimated prices will rise by over 40%, raising the average annual Winter heating costs from about $500 to over $700.

The Manager of Irr Supply Centers Heating and Cooling in Liverpool, Mark Volz, said due to labor shortages and the pandemic, these increases will not slow down anytime soon.

“If you can jack up your prices, people are just going to do it,” Volz said. “That’s what I see, it’s just people are forcing you to pay more. It is a supply and demand issue.”

Campus Hill Apartment is one of the leading landlords at Syracuse University. With over 250 active units spread across the Syracuse University area, Campus Hill sales manager, Madeline Warren said some, but not all, of their tenants, will be affected by this increase. She said most tenants pay utilities out of pocket, but some have their payments covered by Campus Hill.

One Campus Hill tenant, Ethan Fajerman, who pays for his own heat said, although it will be more expensive, he will not use less heat this winter.

“Since it gets so cold in the winter here, I cannot just spend less on heat, or have no heat at all,” Fajerman said. “I will have to follow the rising prices accordingly, and figure out the rest of my budget from that.”

With another extreme winter on the horizon, all central New York residents should plan for an expensive next few months.
