By Noah Wolfe, SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) — Over 4,000 people packed into the Carrier Dome for baseball earlier today.
Yes, you read that correctly.
The New York Mets held their final preseason workout in the Dome in an effort to promote their new Triple-A affiliate and engage fans in central New York. After a six year hiatus in Las Vegas, the Mets brought their most advanced farm team back to New York state through 2043.
The move will greatly benefit the Major League team, according to manager Mickey Callaway. The Mets skipper even went as far to say that bringing the Triple A squad to central New York will result in wins for the team in Queens.
“The rest [factor], the recovery, the ability to go get a player when we need one last minute is big,” he said to a packed press conference room in the Dome.
Moreover, the players going between the top minor league club and the big league team will have an easier travel schedule as well. Instead of last minute cross country flights between Las Vegas and New York, players in transition now only face a quick one hour hop from Hancock International Airport to reach the team in New York.
Bringing the farm team back to Syracuse will benefit the local community as well.
“There’s a lot of money in New York City,” local Mets fan Sarah speculated. “It’s going to come here.”
This means that the financial concerns of Onondaga County relating to the Syracuse Chiefs will be things of the past. Moreover, the team expects that the star power of Tim Tebow and several top prospects will boost attendance at games.
With a strong existing fanbase in central New York already and a positive fan showing at today’s team workout, 2019 is shaping up to be a good year for baseball in Syracuse.
“I’ve been waiting 30 years for this,” said longtime fan Thomas Theall.
And Theall won’t have to wait much longer. The Syracuse Mets kick off their season on Thursday, April 4th at NBT Bank Stadium.
