Lieutenant Joe Nemier of the Tully fire department stood across the stage during the state fair’s annual fire safety puppet show. Nemier has been attending the fair since he was a child. Over 30 years later, he’s now a part of the event, spreading the message of fire safety.

“We wanna make sure the kids get out of the house as fast as they can. And not hide in closets. But we will be there to help them get out if they need to.”

The firefighter was dressed in uniform, posing for photos and talking with children who came up to him throughout the day. He says the most effective way to prevent fires is getting the message out to kids.

“So they can take it back to their parents, and each time they come home and the parents are doing something wrong, the kids will say ‘mom, dad, you gotta do it this way. It’s the best way to do it.”

The fire department’s puppet show has become a staple of the fair, and should continue as a platform to spread fire safety awareness for years to come. Jacy’ Cola, N-C-C News.
