Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News) – The New York State Fair is less than two weeks away.

Thousands of people from across the state will flock to the New York State Fairgrounds over the next month. Rising covid cases in central New York have many questioning whether the fair should be canceled.

According to the CDC, the covid transmission in Onondaga, Oswego, Oneida and Tompkins counties is now classified as substantial. State fair public relations manager Dave Bullard says the fair is following the state’s guidance on making and vaccination.

“The state’s guidance right now for events like ours is that unvaccinated people should wear masks,” Bullard said. “That’s the only guidance so far, if that changes we will implement whatever changes come.”

However, the fair is taking its own steps to ensure safety for guests. Among those is making parking lots and entrance gates cashless.

“We’re reducing contact by making those gates cashless, we’re spacing the vendors on the outside 12 feet apart, and we’ll be in sanitation mode making sure that contact surfaces are clean and sanitary,” Bullard said.

Onondaga County has issued an indoor mask mandate for the fair. The mandate will apply to all guests, regardless of vaccination status.

The fair kicks off on August 20th.
