New York State Marijuana Laws Marijuana Laws in New York State

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS)-  Surely not all of us are aware of the current laws surrounding marijuana in our state. New York State, governed under Andrew Cuomo,  has recently changed its laws surrounding the drug in 2019. Currently, possession of small amounts of marijuana (two ounces and less) is considered a violation. Possession over this amount is still considered a misdemeanor.

The decriminalization of marijuana was also passed in the Senate in 2019. This means, no prison time or a criminal record for first-time offenders found with the two ounces for personal consumption. Instead, the punishment is treated like a traffic violation.  The state of New York has legalized medical marijuana . This comes with certain limitations. Those that acquire medical marijuana in  New York State must qualify for having certain medical conditions.
