SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – The list of adult New Yorkers eligible for a COVID vaccine has reached its culmination as individuals ages 16 or older become eligible on April 6, opening vaccines up to adults statewide.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced this week that vaccine eligibility will expand to ages 30 and older March 30, before completely opening to 16 and up the following week. This was an idea Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon had been pushing for as Central New York vaccinations had already been expanding faster than the rest of the state.
In Monday’s press conference, McMahon said it is typical for over 70% of daily positive tests to be in individuals ages 16-49, the vast majority of whom, become vaccine eligible in the next seven days.
The process taken to vaccinate college campuses is still unknown. “We want to see what Syracuse University gets,” McMahon said. “We want to talk to LeMoyne. ESF. Then we will see where the cases are still going and certainly, we are going to micro target vaccines to where we see cases.”
On the Syracuse University campus, the news allows for a sigh of relief.
