By Gilat Melamed SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — The 2018 Midterm Election is quickly approaching, but there’s another date coming up much sooner, the voter registration deadline.
The deadline to register to vote in New York State is this Friday, October 12th.
You can register in person at the Onondaga County Board of Elections office in Syracuse located at 1000 Erie Blvd W. If you can’t make it to the office, Onondaga County Board of Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny says there are other ways to register too.
“Go to our website, print out a form, put it in the mail, you can do it that way,” he said. “And if you have a New York state driver’s license you can do my DMV and do an online registration.”
Czarny says the Onondaga County Board of Elections has seen such a surge in voter registration that his office is even behind in processing forms. He says this is indicative of what we can see on election day.
“I think that we’re going to see higher than average turnouts, which indicate that it’s a pretty important election to people out there,” he said.
Central New York residents are aware of this. That’s why Kelly Brisson went to the Onondaga County Board of Elections on Wednesday to register to vote.
“I waitress and I know there’s a whole thing about the wage going on, and so I just wanted to make sure that I don’t get my money taken away,” she said.
For other Central New Yorkers, like retired school system worker Elise Baker, her trip to the Board of Elections office on Wednesday wasn’t for herself, but for the Syracuse community. She left the office with an entire stack of voter registration forms.
“I take it upon myself when I see that there’s a need, especially to work with young people, at risk young people primarily, to get their vote and their opinions and matters that may count,” she said.
New Yorkers that are already registered to vote, but can’t make it to the polls on November 6th, have the option to vote by absentee ballot. The request to get an absentee ballot must be submitted at least seven days before election day, and your vote must be mailed in at least one day before election day.
