Nicest Day in Months Brightens Student Morale Beautiful Day at Syracuse University

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – The weather is warming up in Syracuse. On Mar. 10, temperatures escalated to 65 degrees, the warmest since November 20, 2020.

Meanwhile, the Syracuse University campus is showing new signs of life. Many students were out and about enjoying the sunshine in several ways. SU Sophomore and Alaska native Aaron Partnow was simply studying outdoors. For him, this kind of day provided a change of pace.

“It feels nice to have some warmth and to have a new experience,” Partnow said. “Back in Alaska, it’s never this warm early in March.”

Other students got a chance to indulge in some of their favorite physical activities. Sophomore Noah Lehman took his skateboard for a spin along the quad. Lehman said having clear sidewalks gives him a sigh of relief.

“It’s a nice day, so I don’t have to worry about snow and all that, so I’m really excited,” he said.

Junior Sal Pepe, a member of the club frisbee team, had his disc ready for today. According to Pepe, today was more than about playing the sport he loves.

“Being able to hang out with friends and what not…especially when it’s nice outside, it’s really fun,” he said.

Morale has not been easy to come by during the global pandemic. Now a full year after the university first made the decision to shut down in-person classes, students could finally catch a breath of fresh air.

GAMBARO: Here at Syracuse University, it feels like spring has sprung. Though eleven days of winter remain, the last powdery patches are saying goodbye. With the departure of the snow comes the arrival of the sun. And on campus, the students are loving it.

Ally PASCO: The sunshine always puts me in such a good mood. I love when it is this nice out in the middle of March.

Brendan REWAKOWSKI: It feels o good after being inside all these months.

GAMBARO: For some students, this kind of weather is unusual. Sophomore Aaron Partnow comes from Fairbanks, Alaska, near the Arctic Circle. He says the heat provides a nice change of pace.

PARTNOW: It feels nice to have some warmth and to have a new experience because back in Alaska, it’s never this warm early in March.

GAMBARO: Fellow sophomore Colette Goldstein comes from much warmer Los Angeles. And even for her, there’s something special about a day like today.

GOLDSTEIN: It feels nicer, it feels different. At home, I feel like I’m not as grateful for days like these because they happen so often. Whereas, when I’m here, days like these are amazing.

GAMBARO: Temperatures are in the 60s for the first time since November of last year. And as I can feel the sweat starting to settle in, it’s become pretty clear to me by now that something like “this” might have been a better choice for me today. Others seem completely content sticking with sleeves, as long as they get to enjoy the great outdoors. Whether it be sitting around with friends, walking the dog; or, if you’re Noah Lehman: seizing the clear walkways of the quad and pulling out the skateboard.

LEHMAN: Yeah, I mean, I ride it around. It’s a nice day, so I don’t have to worry about snow and all that, so I’m really excited for that.

GAMBARO: In the same manner, Sayf Ahmed and Sal Pepe have been itching to play frisbee again.

AHMED: I haven’t played frisbee that much recently, so I’m a little sloppy, but it feels good.

PEPE: I’m on the club frisbee team, nd we haven’t been able to get a ton of practices in o we’ve just been meeting once a week. So, any extra time being able to hang out with friends and what not and just bringing a frisbee, especially when it’s nice outside, it’s really fun.

GAMBARO: No matter the activity, one thing’s for sure. When the thermometer number goes up, so too does the campus atmosphere. Reporting in sunny Syracuse, Carson Gambaro, NCC News.
