MADISON HILIMIRE: Lisa Hilton Glover is a resident of North Syracuse, who’s latest project is giving away goodie bags to kids in need. Nicknamed ‘Sugar Fairy Bags’.
NAT SOUND: “I love the Sugary Fairy!”
HILIMIRE: Glover fills the bags with stickers, games, snacks, and juice boxes. She then puts them on her porch and families can come pick them up. Shaneeka Graves brought her four nieces and nephews to cheer them up, after their apartment complex burnt down last month. Somehow Lisa still put a smile on their faces.
NAT SOUND: “Thank you, Lisa!”
LISA HILTON GLOVER: Right now, like at that moment, it gives the child something to take their mind off the pandemic. The worries, it gives them a little smile. They can play with their toy, eat their little munchies. And the best part is that they’re all sugared up and they get to drive their parents wild.
HILIMIRE: Kids like Riley Alsheari even burst out into song when they get their bag.
NAT SOUND: “Let it go…let it go!”
HILIMIRE: Glover says the effect the pandemic has on children is what inspired her to give back.
HILTON GLOVER: I have children myself and grandchildren and you know it’s a lot to take in. Like I said it puts a smile on their face. They can’t play with their friends. All children love toys, all children love candy.
Hilimire: These little sugar fairy bags may be simple. But the reason why Glover gives these away is because she knows what it feels like to struggle.
Hilton Glover: The family I cam from my father was very wealthy and my mother was poor. It was a rough childhood and I learned what it’s like to have everything a child wanted, except the love part. And I knew how it was to have absolutely nothing. It all comes down to being grateful and appreciative. And with my upbringing I chose to keep that heart going that I had. I think it’s always nice to help somebody.
Hilimire: Glover has given out hundreds of bags to kids in need. She says she’ll keep giving out bags until she can put a smile on every child’s face in Syracuse. Madison Hilimire, NCC News.

She started a Facebook group titled, “Syracuse, helping one another” where members can post about events in the area, clothing drives, and items they are willing to donate. The group was created over six years ago and has over 5,000 members.
Hilton Glover’s latest project that she advertises on the page is for her project she likes to call sugar fairy bags. The bags are filled with stickers, games, snacks and juice boxes. She then puts them on her porch and families can come pick them up.
“Right now like at that moment, it gives the child something to take their mind of the pandemic,” Hilton Glover said. “It gives them a little smile. They can play with their toy, eat their little munchies, and the best part is that they’re all sugared up and get to drive their parents wild.”
Shaneeka Graves brought her four nieces and nephews to Hilton Glover’s house to get the bags. Last month, the apartment complex her nieces and nephews lived in was lost in a fire.
In addition to the bags, Hilton Glover gave the family blankets, jackets and other clothing items that they needed.
When asked why she does all of this for her community, Glover said that she knows what it’s like to struggle.
“The family I came from my father was very wealthy and my mother was poor,” Hilton Glover said. “It was a rough childhood and I learned what it’s like to have everything a child wanted, except the love part.”
Hilton Glover has children and grandchildren of her own, and said the effect the pandemic has had on children is what inspired her to give back.
“Like I said it puts a smile on their face,” Hilton Glover said. “They can’t play with their friends. And all children love toys, all children love candy and snacks.”
Since the start of the pandemic, Hilton Glover has given out over 250 bags to kids all over Syracuse. She said that she will continue to give out the bags until every child in need gets one.
