Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News) — Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will partner with NASA for a celebration for next April’s total solar eclipse. Niagara Falls will be the site of special programming and events leading up to the eclipse.
The events are set to begin a few days before the eclipse, with NASA scientists and other experts running events at various locations throughout Niagara Falls. These include the state park, public library, and even the aquarium, among others. All events will be free and open to the public.
NASA Associate Administrator for Science Nicola Fox is looking forward to reaching the youth of the community, “We hope these events, along with all our nationwide eclipse activities, inspire and encourage the next generation – the Artemis Generation – of explorers, scientists, and engineers.”
Next April’s eclipse will be a total solar eclipse, meaning that the moon will completely block the Sun, causing the sky to darken and re-create the lighting of dawn or dusk, according to NASA. The eclipse will begin in Niagara Falls at 2:04 pm and will be visible in its full form at 3:18 pm, lasting just over three and a half minutes, according to the state.
State Senator Rob Ortt is excited for Niagara Falls To host the unique event, “A total Solar Eclipse is a rare, exciting event and the fact Western New York is at the center of one next year and NASA scientists are going to provide special events and programming in our area will make for some truly unforgettable experiences, in addition to providing a much-needed boost to the Niagara Falls economy.” There won’t be another solar eclipse until August 2044.
