Today is National Coming Out Day, a holiday commemorating LGBTQ+ individuals and the process of coming out of the closet to live openly.
But Syracuse student Alex Middleton said that while the day is good for visibility that the process still labels LGBTQ+ people as different.
“Why is there so much impetus on coming out as a barometer of truth. When are straight people going to come out as straight?” they said.
SU’s Pride Union held an event yesterday called “Chalk the Quad” where participants drew affirming chalk slogans and drawings on the sidewalks in the quad at Syracuse University – which were still visible today as students walked to class.
National Coming Out Day is celebrated every Oct 11 and was founded by Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary, two queer activists, in 1988.
