Prison Package Protest Taking Place in Syracuse Downtown Prison Package Protest Taking Place DownTown Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — New York state put a law into effect last August that prohibits packages from being delivered to prisoners.

Syracuse locals are protesting against this new restriction this Thursday. Families with incarcerated loved ones and advocates are outside Senator John H. Hughes State Office Building. One protestor, Liza Acquah, said this policy is unfair to those behind bars.

“The other inmates look at how they’re receiving packages, it makes them seem as though…they’re loved by someone on the outside,”Acquah said. “You know what I’m saying by not receiving packages, they feel like they’re not cared about. ”

The new restrictions require family members to buy goods from a small number of private vendors, all of whom charge above market rates for the goods they provide and have a shocking lack of fresh foods available for purchase.
