We have seen an increase in the number of jobs that we have in our Syracuse metro area so we have seen widespread job growth which has helped to lower our local unemployment rate. We do have more people employed over the year and fewer unemployed and that has also contributed to a lower unemployment rate.
The good thing about our job growth over the year it has impacted a lot of different industries and a lot of different types of occupations so at some of our large companies like a lot of our defense related companies like Lockheed Martin and SRC you have job growth especially within industries and occupations such as engineers software developers, project managers but then you also have jobs being created in all different types of industries such as construction manufacturing and health services. So that has helped to increase some wages at some of our local employers they have looked to hire or to actually increase wages at the labor wages has tightened there’s less people available for the jobs so that can also lead to increases in wages for our job seekers.
When we look at census bureau data on population our total pop has decreased slightly over the decade in Onondaga country and some of our surrounding counties so we’ve seen a little bit decline in the total population in our area but our labor force has increased over the year which is a good thing we have more people employed and fewer unemployed so our total labor force has increased which is good for an economy you want to see growing in that sense.
Definitely STEM occupations are growing here in Syracuse as well as nationally with engineering occupations growing a lot, computer related jobs, software developers, things like that are developing in our region so there’s definitely a demand for that; not enough students are going into that career field but there’s also demand at all levels when we are talking about construction and manufacturing for electricians and welders and plumbers so there’s really a growing demand for occupations locally.
Well what we’re seeing in terms of our population trends too is that the baby boomers are aging and getting older, they’re retiring out of the job market so we need younger workers to come in and replace some of these individuals so that’s where we are seeing some of the issues is sometimes students aren’t training for the occupations that are most in demand so that’s one of the areas where we need students where we need students to train in all different types of occupations especially those growing in our region.
Well its really a cross section, for instance we have a lot of demand for register nurses, and truck drivers, and for machinist, and teachers, also entry level occupations, service related occupations, food service industries – cooks, I mean it really again is across the broad spectrum of occupations, most of our jobs are growing in the region which is a good sign is that the economy has been growing and is strong at this point in time.
We probably haven’t seen a job market this like this, strong in a couple decades. With our unemployment rates being at a 18 year low for the month of May we haven’t seen rates that low since May of 2001 and our job numbers are the same thing at very high levels compared to the last couple decades so it’s definitely a great time to be looking for work in our job market.
We keep hearing more and more from employers besides the STEM occupations are the occupations of people using their hands so the skilled trades there’s so much demand and very high paying jobs. Welders electricians especially when we talk about electricians you can make $30/hour or more here in Syracuse being an electrician, so I think that’s what a lot of students don’t know about some of these other occupations that they might not have heard of or weren’t exposed to.
By: Nia Gibson SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Unemployment rates are at its lowest since 2001. According to the New York State Department of Labor unemployment is at 3.7 percent. The Division of Research and Statistics says Syracuse residents can capitalize off this opportunity no matter where their talents lie.
There are a broad spectrum of jobs in demand. Science, technology, engineering, and math related fields (S.T.E.M.) in addition to trade and health services are all fields where it is possible to garner competitive wages and benefits.
“STEM occupations are growing here in Syracuse as well as nationally with engineering occupations growing a lot, computer related jobs, [and] software developers”, Department of Labor Economist Karen Knapik-Scalzo said. “But there’s also demand at all levels when talking about construction and manufacturing for electricians, welders, and plumbers”.
Knapik-Scalzo explains that with most jobs growing in Onondaga and neighboring counties indicate that the economy may be stronger than it has been in the past two decades. She says that students are not aware or exposed to opportunities in the Syracuse region that can have fruitful benefits in terms of income.
More jobs are being created because companies can satisfy the demand. For example there are more than 320,000 non-farm jobs open, 4,000 information jobs, 31,000 leisure and hospitality jobs and 55,000 government jobs.
The Syracuse region is on the rise and it has never been a better time to be looking for a job in this Central New York City.
