Reviving a Treasured Local Baseball Field Reviving the Treasured Local Baseball Field

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — A local baseball field filled with decades of history is undergoing a transformation, marking a new era for the Syracuse Little League. With generous support from sponsors, the league is breathing new life into its environment, paving the way for a revitalized community hub.

The Shelley family who previously owned the land donated it to Syracuse Little League. The fields stand as a testament to community spirit, with the understanding that diligent upkeep ensures their continued use for generations to come.

Frances Zaryski, a member of the board, said maintenance is important in preserving the rich legacy of the fields.

“The facilities that you now stand on were donated to the league from the Shelley family. They sold it to us for $1 and we have life rights as long as we maintain the fields,” said Zaryski.

The community’s dedication to the maintenance of six fields is made possible through the contributions of sponsors and volunteers. Their efforts ensure that these fields remain updated and ready for play. With their support, essential enhancements like fresh dirt, crisp chalk lines, sturdy bases, and newly painted cages become possible.

Little League player Emmett Kulcyznski expressed deep gratitude for these upgrades, acknowledging their significant impact on the overall playing experience.

“The dirt feels more grippy than last year and the mural is pretty amazing. When I saw it I was like wow that’s really cool,” said Kulcyznski.

Infield grooming machines, as highlighted by President Morse, efficiently maintain all six fields in just one hour compared to the six-person, six-hour process required for a single field. This advancement not only helps maintain efforts but also optimizes resources, allowing for a more efficient use of time and manpower.

Lori George, known as Grandma Lori,  said the increased funding over the years has had a positive impact.

“Anything that we do down here goes to renovating everything around here, the major field over here I’m sure you’ve seen that’s upgraded. We got the new scoreboard,” said George.

As the Syracuse Little League embarks on this journey of renewal, the community stands together in its commitment to supporting and funding ongoing renovations.
