WEEDSPORT, N.Y. (NCC News)- The Weedsport Junior-Senior High School holds a small gym on the second floor, a gym that was finally filled for the first time on Thursday night.
The Weedsport Women’s basketball team held their first open gym of the year, when in a normal season they would’ve already played by now.
“So I think that just being able to get in here with all of my friends and the coaches, and to get my hands on a basketball,” senior Emma Stark said. “It kind of just takes the stress of everything else away.”
In a year filled with challenges, it’s hard to not look back on the success of past years. And the team had the most successful year in their history going 21-2 and making a trip to the sectional finals last season.
The team lost to Cooperstown in the sectional final game, and were the favorite to win this year.
Yet Section III voted on Thursday night to postpone the start of the winter sports season to December 14th. And to ultimately cancel the sectional tournament.
Senior Suzie Nemec became a member of the 1,000th point club last year, and has multiple college coaches looking for her to play at their schools. But her most important goal?
Winning a sectional championship with her team. Something that has now been taken away from her.
“Sectionals has always been a big part of my career, my high school career,” Nemec said. “But knowing that there’s not going to be one is kind of pushing it down a bit. That we have nothing really to win.”
However, Nemec did say she was just excited to get the opportunity to play with her team and to compete for a league title.
Although Section III and many other sections are cancelling or postponing season and tournaments, Nemec really put it all into perspective.
“Honestly if we just keep working together. It doesn’t matter if we have a championship win or not,” Nemec said. “If we have a great season, I count that as a win.”
The season schedule has not been reported, but this team is already ready to play.
