SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS)- A robbery recently took place on McAllister Avenue of the South Side that bargains the question of how you can safely sell your items online.

On Sept. 28, there was an incident involving a 20-year-old woman who attempted to sell her Apple Watch. Alone, she became surrounded by several men, one who had a handgun. Public Informations Officer of the Syracuse Police Department, Lieutenant Matthew Malinowski, said the men demanded her property and she complied. The men then left the scene.

The victim of the robbery said she had contacted the potential buyer through Facebook market place. Lt. Malinowski said this is not the only Facebook market place sale gone wrong.

Malinowski wants to ensure people are taking precautions to be safe and asks that if a person is pursuing a sale, they bring a friend, exchange in a very public setting, and research the buyer before hand.

With burglaries such as these, Malinowski said there is no certain pattern and it most comes in waves. Groups will see others fail or succeed at stealing and want to try for themselves.

“We have to remember that there’s an inherent risk that exists because people want to take advantage,” Malinowski said.

The investigation is ongoing. Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call them at (315) 442-5200
