SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) – After Monday’s precipitation and a high chance of showers in the next 48 hours, the rainfall Tropical Storm Debby brings as it makes its way along the East Coast could impact the Central New York area.

Monday night’s severe weather struck Central New York as over an inch of rain fell in Syracuse, flash flooding affected Oneida County and an EF1 tornado touched down in Buffalo.

“We’ll probably still have saturated grounds from yesterday’s rain and then today’s rain,” said National Weather Service Meteorologist at Binghamton Ben Lott. “We’ll see probably a greater chance for potential for flash flooding.”

Debby is predicted to pass through New York on Saturday after making landfall in Florida on Monday as a Category 1 hurricane. Since, the slow-moving system has been downgraded to a tropical storm, but is bringing heavy rainfall and high winds to the Carolinas as it makes its way up north. In Charleston, South Carolina, more than two feet of precipitation accumulated as a result of Debby.

“Still quite a bit of uncertainty, but the potential is there for heavy rain and additional hydro issues,” Lott said.

Locals should prepare for the potential of flooding and heavy rain as any travel may be hindered as Debby passes the area.
