Sheraton Staff Will Have Jobs After The Close Sheraton Workers to Keep Jobs After Closure

What Syracuse University will do for the Sheraton Staff

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)–Syracuse University’s The Sheraton will be closing following Commencement 2024. The on campus hotel is a big player in the hotel industry and leaves concerns over the lack of guest rooms in the area and the jobs of the people who work there.

With the loss of 235 hotel rooms this will greatly affect Syracuse’s ability to host big occasions like sporting events and parents weekends. Guest rooms being so limited in Syracuse already,  people that come to Syracuse will have to find other places to stay.

Sam who is apart of the maintenance staff at the Sheraton  says that the Sheraton isn’t the only close by hotel people can venture to.

“People used to come here because it’s close by to the dorms … and now that it’s closing turning into dorms they can branch out to the Marriott,  stuff like that downtown,” Sam said.

The Sheraton currently employs  upwards of 80 employees holding positions ranging from reception to hospitality. Once the Sheraton closes the university has a plan to have the staff covered with union jobs and positions on campus. Sam says that he will be in good hands after the closure.

“They’re gonna make sure we have jobs… make sure nobody’s gonna be without a job,” he said.

The new dorm rooms will include all of the hotel amenities such as an indoor pool and a fitness center. Make sure to book your final stay at the Sheraton before the closure in May 2024.

SYDNEY FROELICH:
“At the beginning of November it was announced that the Sheraton Hotel will convert into student housing. The NCAA tournament was supposed to be hosted in Syracuse, but has been called off since the announcement.

Sam, a maintenance worker is positive that other hotels can have the capacity to host these events in the future.

SAM:
‘People used to come here on the spot because it’s close by to the dorms and it’s convenient and now that it’s, you know, closing turning to dorms they can branch out to the Marriott, stuff like that downtown. Or the other hotels on Eerie Blvd!’

SYDNEY FROELICH:
The Lack of 235 hotel rooms takes a big hit to the city’s economy and raises concerns over Sheraton staff being unemployed, but Sam explains that the University will have them covered.

SAM:
‘Well they’re gonna make sure we have jobs, you know, make sure nobody’s gonna be, you know, without a job or anything so that’s what they’re working on.’

SYDNEY FROELICH:
Because of the loss of the on-campus hotel, there are high hopes that a new hotel will be built on campus

With N-C-C News this is Sydney Froelich”.
