Anchor, Kay Racine: The greatest American gymnast of all time has added to her legacy this afternoon. N-C-Cs Shariden Truly tells us how Simone Biles manages to be the goat on and off the floor.
Reporter, Shariden Truly: Simone Biles won her ninth Olympic medal today, making her the most decorated American gymnast. This achievement is significant for African American women.
Reporter, Truly: Central New Yorkers like Jade Pennyman say her return to the Olympics after overcoming a mental health condition is an inspiration.
Jade Pennyman: “I respect her for coming back into a space that she may have felt uncomfortable in. I think that was really awesome for her.”
Reporter, Truly: Biles pulled out of several events during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She made it through the Olympic trials this year despite an ankle injury.
Pennyman: “It shows you how remarkable Black women are. It doesn’t matter what they throw on us, the type of stereotypes, or how the media tries to portray us, I really definitely feel like it shows that we always have grit and wit.”

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Simone Biles won her ninth Olympic medal, making her the most decorated American gymnast. This achievement is significant for African American women.
Fans like Jade Pennyman say that her return to the Olympics after suffering from a mental condition known as the “Twisties” has been an inspiration.
“I respect her for coming back into a space that she may have felt uncomfortable in. I think that was really awesome for her,” said Pennyman.
As a result of her mental block, Biles pulled out of several events during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She has recovered and powered through an injury from the Olympic qualifiers in Paris this year. Central New Yorker Sofia Rodriguez believes Biles has set a wonderful example for those who will follow in her footsteps.
“Something about seeing Black women in a sport that we’re often underrepresented in is really important to me. It’s really inspiring to see other women doing good while also thinking about what that means for future generations,” said Rodriguez.
