SKANEATELES, N.Y. (NCC NEWS)—HGTV is a station known for home design, remodeling, and real estate, and the company has found some hidden gems across the country. HGTV ranked the top fifty most charming towns in each state. Skaneateles took home the gold for New York and came in 31st place in the nation. Ellen Percival is a New York state resident who said this award came as no surprise.
“It’s beautiful. I mean, the colors, you know, it’s beautiful in the fall, colors and everything,” she said.
The town is situated on a lake, and many stunning shops and restaurants line the edge of the water. Julie Dann, the owner of the Genesee Daley Store just moved to Skaneateles and said that she has no regrets about opening a store in the village.
“You’ve got great shopping great restaurants and good people. So how could we not be named? That’s the way I look at it,” she said.
Kay DiNardo has been in Skaneateles for over thirty years and owns the shop, Vermont Green Mountain Speciality Co. She said that she thinks there will be an increase in tourism in Skaneateles and is looking forward to meeting the new people who come to visit.
“I think you know, I think plenty of people watch HGTV so that we will get to meet a lot of new people you know, more than we do now, which is great. Because you’re of course and just experience how beautiful it is here,” she said.
Hilary Fenner is the executive director at the Chamber of Commerce in Skaneateles. She said this recognition is honorable and her office has made a real effort in trying to make tourism a priority in the community. She said that they make sure there are events year-round. But that’s not the only thing that Fenner is proud of, she takes pride in the town’s comradery.
“So there’s not only a wonderful tourism community, but there’s also a wonderful local community here,” Fenner said.
