Stress Therapy Dogs Help Students Students and Stress Therapy Dogs

Mental Health Awareness Week

By Kerri McAneney SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) –Karley is standing in a long line inside of Bird Library in Syracuse. Her eyes are locked on her phone except for a few brief moments where she is looking around the library. She appears to be waiting for someone. As she takes a glance across the room a loud bark sounds from behind a door. It just so happens that she is in a line that is leading into that room. She’s here for the therapy dogs.

This week is Mental Health Awareness week, it’s a national week of recognition of mental health and mental health education. Every year Syracuse University’s Office of Health Promotion put on multiple events throughout the week for students.

What Karley is waiting in line for one of the most popular events that they put on every year, stress therapy dogs. Every other Thursday they have “Therapy Dog Thursdays,” but since it’s Mental Health Awareness week they brought them back a bit early.

Katelyn Cowen, the Director of the university’s Office of Health Promotion is always happy to bring these dogs back for students.

And since it’s getting close to midterms, students have a lot to stress about.

If someone missed this event and wants to get involved there are plenty of events that anyone can check out this week.

There is meditation on the Quad on Thursday October 4th and the Trial Run at Sawmill Creek Shelter Saturday October 6th.
