SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) –– Syracuse University begins its fall semester in just three weeks. Many students have already begun to move back to the area. While masks were recently re-instated in all indoor facilities on campus, classes are expected to be at full capacity this upcoming semester.
Irving Gonzales just moved into his Syracuse-area apartment on Monday. He is about to begin his first year at SU’s Maxwell School, where he is studying public administration. Gonzales hopes students will follow the campus guidelines.
“I expect students to comply by university standards and regulations because I think it is really important for our safety and campus environment,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales’ biggest concern coming to campus is that students won’t take the rules seriously. He is worried about another potential Covid outbreak, which could lead to the school shutting down again.
“I’m concerned that students won’t take this seriously, and that our cases and cases in the Syracuse surrounding areas are going to increase,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales added that he is fine with the current mask policy. The school is currently unsure when the mask mandate will be lifted. As long as it’s deemed the safest option, he sees no problems with wearing face coverings.
