SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — The Onondaga County Legislature recently recognized outstanding achievements by honoring a distinguished teacher and several college athletes.

Applause filled the chambers as the guests received this prestigious accolade.

Among the honorees was Syracuse University rower Emmie Frederico, who shared her feelings about the recognition.

“It makes you realize that there are people in the community that actually care about what we’re doing. Everyone was so excited — outside of just our team. It’s pretty special to know there are people cheering us on even when we don’t see them all the time,” Frederico said.

Other recipients included the Onondaga Community College (OCC) lacrosse team and their women’s discus national champion, Bryn Whitman.

Additionally, Marjorie Day Carter, the first Black teacher hired in Syracuse, was posthumously honored.

This celebration highlights the community’s appreciation and support for local educators and athletes, showcasing their significant contributions and inspiring future generations.
