By Alazia Williams, SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Over 25 years ago a woman jogging through Central Park in Manhattan was found beaten and raped in a ravine.
Five young men — Korey Wise, Raymond Santana Jr., Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray and Kevin Richardson — were wrongfully convicted and sentenced to over 5 years in prison. More than a decade later, DNA evidence connected another man to the crime and the five men were exonerated.
Since the release of the docuseries, “When They See Us,” the Central Park Five have been making headlines across the nation. Oprah Winfrey recently sat down with the five men and Kevin Richardson told her that he had dreams of coming to Syracuse University and joining the band.
Jalen Nash , a Syracuse University senior, then started a petition to award Richardson with an honorary doctorate.
