Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News) – For the first time in over a year, Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome opened its doors to fans for a sporting event on campus. The Dome was shut down once SU classes were moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the only time students were let inside the Dome was to get their weekly COVID test.
On Saturday, the Dome welcomed over 200 fans for the Men’s Lacrosse game against Vermont, although the capacity was set at 900. A negative COVID test was required 24 hours before the game, followed by another rapid test right before the game.
“This is good,” Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said in a press briefing. “This is going to give some of these kids who have never been in that facility, other than probably getting a test, the opportunity to go and cheer on some of their classmates.”
There has been no official word yet from the university about whether or not fans will be let into the Dome for this Friday’s game against Stony Brook, however fans were met with a hopeful message at the end of Saturday’s game:
“We look forward to seeing you right back here on the 12th,” the PA announcer said after the game.
