CLAY , NY (NCC News): Sunshine Horses is a non profit organization that is run entirely by volunteers. Volunteers they are running short on right now says Jan Lower one of the lead volunteers. Sunshine Horses does not have professional fundraisers and no one collects a salary. All of the funds collected are used for the horses and the costs that the farm accrues.
Sunshine horses also helps people. It has teamed up with many community affiliates in Onondaga county who work one-on-one with horses. Members of the farm said it is an experience everyone should have. Before COVID-19 the farm had over 400 volunteers that would be on call 365 days a year, now it is in need of some help.
Volunteers are scheduled to do a variety of things around the farm , including assisting with rotating the pasture, moving the horses to different pens to create the feeling of a wild herd migration, and filling out feeding sheets to keep the horses consistent on their diets.
Sunshine Horses does their best to nurse, rehabilitate and retrain horses so they can be adopted into loving homes. They each horse on their own personal regiment because some need more attention than others. This could be things like grooming, dental care or hoof care.
According to the Humane Society Legislative Fund , more than 100,000 horses are unnecessarily slaughtered every year. On top of that many of them are left behind when they aren’t valuable anymore. Families unable to maintain the costs of having a horse during these tough times, drives those numbers up even more.
Jan Lower the former community outreach coordinator said any help would be appreciated, as well as loving families who are looking to adopt one of the horses they have rehabilitated.
