Surge in Abandoned Pets is Overcrowding Local Shelters Surge in Abandoned Pets is Overcrowding Local Shelters

Volunteer Coordinator, Donna Newman, says the shelter has strategies to get animals adopted.

“We do a lot with social media, we take them to different events. Our volunteers do a great job of socializing them and walking them, we have shelter training classes for our pets.”

However, Newman says there are struggles of overcrowding despite the strive to promote adoption.

“For every one animal that gets adopted, there’s like two or three waiting to come in.”

Newman recommends that people visit the CNY SPCA when looking for a pet.

She says there’s lots of unique animals that all deserve a second chance and a loving home.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The surge in abandoned pets at Central New York SPCA has created a critical overcrowding issue.

With limited space and resources, staff and volunteers work to ensure each animal receives the necessary care.

The Volunteer Coordinator, Donna Newman, says the shelter strives to promote the animals to prospective parents every day but still has its struggles.

“For every one animal that gets adopted, there’s like two or three waiting to come in,” she said.

To reduce overcrowding, CNY SPCA is hosting an event to encourage adoption.

It will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, and will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The event will be at the shelter located at 5878 East Molloy Road.

“We’re going to have an ice cream truck and some different games,” said Newman.

Newman also said a Girls Scout Troop will be in attendance.

“They’re doing a fundraiser for us by heading a lemonade stand,” she said.

There will be many adoptable animals at the event, and guests will have the chance to meet their new best friend.
