SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Prestwick Golf Shop in Syracuse takes a unique way at customizing golf clubs. The shop, while small in size, offers a lot more than just your typical golf store.
Owner Ed Patterson has owned the shop right off I-81 on the corner of Court Street and Sunset Avenue since 1996. Patterson has been in the golf business for over thirty years, but his roots trace back a lot farther than that.
“The routine during the summer time when I was a kid was go to the grocery store, go home and unload the groceries and then go play a nine hole course with my mom in Rochester,” Patterson said.
Patterson focuses on specializing clubs to the player’s swing. He does not carry the newest clubs on the market, instead, Patterson focuses on your swing and how he can fix it.
“I’m really the only guy that does this in town that is an independent compared to a Golf Galaxy or Dick’s,” Patterson said. “I do a lot of specialty work that they won’t do. ”
Patterson tailors your clubs specifically to your swing. Whether you have to get new grips, adjust the loft on your irons and driver or work on your swing mechanics, Patterson has the equipment and the space to help.
If you walk into Patterson’s shop, you will notice a lot of older clubs. Walk into his work space in the back of the shop and you feel like you went back in time. The tools back there have dust on them. Everything is separated into old files and everything is written down on a piece of paper.
“Why would I upgrade my equipment when I can use a blowtorch and a crowbar to take a head off a driver?” Patterson said. “When you have done it as long as I have, there is no need to get the newest technology and spend all that money.”
At age 62, Patterson says he wants to retire in three years. His plans as to what he wants to do after he retires are simple.
“Play more golf,” Patterson said. “I’m not much of a guy who takes care of his lawn. I go to a place where the lawn is taken care of instead.”
Prestwick offers a selection of drivers, irons, putters, grips, shafts and a room where you can swing and hit into a net.
The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
