The yearly activity Hope for the Holidays started early Friday at six in the morning. The event consists of “Santa dressed volunteers,” known as the Old Newsboys, selling donated newspapers to citizens. The money they make out of the sale is donated to the Christmas Bureau, that’ll buy some goods, like food and toys, to selected families of the city.
Tom Brown, Chairman for the Hope for Holidays/Old Newsboys campaign, said that even matching last year’s donation would be a great success.
“Last year we were able to get a little more than $50,000, I would say that around $52,000,” Brown said. “The year before that we were able to get about $49,000, so we are always aiming to that $50,000 mark.”
The Old Newsboys will continue to sell newspapers throughout Saturday, starting at the same time in the morning, all the way to the afternoon. However, there are some groups of volunteers that are not satisfied by working during the day.
“Late in the afternoon there aren’t many groups like in the morning, but we have some committed people that will go and try to sell newspapers at night in different bars,” Brown said.
One volunteer that has been participating in the Hope for the Holidays for five years is Trish LaMonte. She says it’s really important for her to help others, and that she loves how only one person can make a huge difference.
“I haven’t had the opportunity to count the money that I’ve collected, but I’m pretty sure is around $200,” LaMonte said. “This can make a big difference in the community, especially here at Syracuse, where there are many people that need it.”
Old Newsboys will be out selling newspapers Saturday in many places throughout the city. Moreover, the ones that stand out are Armory Square, the Oncenter, and all through Downtown.
However, if someone wants to donate, but can’t find anybody selling newspapers, or it’s just too cold outside, people can donate online at Syracuse.com/oldnewsboys.
Distribution date, for the goods of the families and toys for the kids, will take place at the Oncenter Wednesday, December 19 at 8:30 am.
