SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — On Nov. 7, federal judge Glenn Suddaby in Central New York overturned the Gun Law ruling by Governor Kathy Hochul which consists of banning the carrying of firearms in areas such as public parks, movie theaters, and churches.
Suddaby explained his reasoning for the ruling in a statement.
“The subjective and vague standard of ‘good moral character could allow licensing officers to deny an application if they were to see reflected in a compulsively disclosed social media handle any hobby, activity, political ideology, sexual preference, or social behavior that they personally deem to show bad ‘temperament’ or ‘judgment,’” Suddaby said.
Tim Nelson owns Intimidator Sports, a gun shop in the Syracuse area. Nelson agrees with the judge’s ruling because he feels that it will help citizens feel comfortable and safe when in public spaces.
“I know if I’m going to the movie theaters, Its more comforting for me to know that I’m able to carry concealed than not to be able to,” Nelson said. “And be afraid that somebody’s going to be in that theater that does have a firearm and I’m going got be left there unprotected.”
Ana Jones is a local Syracuse resident. She feels that reversing the ruling will only bring more danger.
“I think that to counteract an abundance of something, to bring more of it, sounds counterintuitive to me,” Jones said. “I go by the ideology that the best way to make sure a rule remains enforced, so it’s not necessarily the implementation of the rule that matters so much as the enforcement making sure that those rules are abided.”
