SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – A Syracuse native can call Destiny USA his new home. His store Mastermind is now open in the mall giving customers a selection of urban streetwear. Owner and creator, Jamel Newsome is excited to bring his brand to his hometown shopping center for people to enjoy. This is his second location and Newsome feels this is an opportunity to show the people of Syracuse his brand and how far he has come.
Many retail stores across the nation are closing—largely due to the pandemic—but that didn’t stop Newsome. He said Mastermind caters to the community and that he knows what the people of Syracuse want and need, which is what sets his store apart from others. Opening this store was a goal and he knew if he wanted to have a store in the mall, he could do it.
“It was just a try, but they say if you don’t try, you don’t know,” Newsome said.
His first location is on North Salina Street, which offers a streetwear vibe while the mall location gives off an urban look. Newsome said he is proud of his accomplishments and confident it will be successful. He said rumors about the mall being millions of dollars in debt won’t directly affect him because his brand is his brand.
“I do my own inventory, I pick my own inventory out, so I kind of know what’s going. I am not corporate, I am self owned so I know what to buy,” Newsome said.
Mastermind is located on the second floor of Destiny USA, across from the Crocs store and next to Earth Trading Company.
