Both the Rose Laying Ceremony and Convocation will be held in person and online.

JACKSON HOLZER: Here at Syracuse University, 35 selected students are sitting in the same formation as the 35 students who died while on the plane. Remembrance scholar Elizabeth Acquaah-Harrison says being back in-person spreads more awareness than being online.

ELIZABETH ACQUAAH-HARRISON: Being able to sit in the chairs in person. It’s kind of this living exhibit that draws people in, has them stop and engage more. I think that gets a little bit lost in a virtual setting.

JACKSON HOLZER: Last April the traditional rose laying ceremony and convocation were held online. Remembrance Scholar Advisor Kelly Rodoski says there are some takeaways that are carrying over this time around.

KELLY RODOSKI: The rose laying ceremony and the convocation on Friday are being live streamed.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Syracuse University is hosting its annual Remembrance Week this week to honor the 35 students who were killed in the 1988 Lockerbie plane crash. All the events are in-person after being virtual last spring.

Elizabeth Acquaah-Harrison, Remembrance Scholar, said being back in-person spreads more awareness than being online.

“Being able to sit in the chairs in person.” remarked Acquaah-Harrison. “It’s kind of this living exhibit that draws people in, has them stop and engage more. I think that gets a little bit lost in a virtual setting.”

The traditional Rose Laying Ceremony and Convocation were held online in April after both events were postponed last October. Kelly Rodoski, Remembrance Scholar advisor, said there were lessons from the virtual ceremonies that are carrying over this time around.

“The Rose Laying Ceremony and the Convocation on Friday are being live streamed,” said Rodoski. “That’s one of the lessons we learned across the board with the pandemic.”

The Rose Laying Ceremony starts at 2:03 P.M. and the Convocation begins at 3:00 P.M. on Friday. Both events will be held at Hendricks Chapel. The events will also be live streamed for those who cannot attend in person. The link to register for the events is here.
