SYRACUSE, N.Y. (N.C.C. News)— Everyday, people decide to take a chance and play the lottery. They dream of buying houses, cars and all sorts of expensive items.

For Syracuse resident Michael Jones, he would choose to help others in need.

“I’d donate a lot. I’d donate a lot to the homeless,” Jones said.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), nearly 600,000 Americans are part of the homeless population. Here in New York, 74,178 people experience homelessness making it the second-largest state in homeless populations.

Jones says he’s always been one to help those in need and learned to do so at a very young age.

“That’s just how I was raised,” he said.

This past Mega Millions was a record amount. The lucky winner from Florida won $1.58 billion.

Another drawing will take place Friday at 8 p.m.. Although the winnings won’t be as large, you could still win the estimated whopping amount of  $20 million.
