Syracuse Sidewalks To Become More Accessible Syracuse Sidewalk Renovations

Syracuse City Council Approves $1.2 Million To Fix Sidewalks

You can say goodbye to old, dingy sidewalks in Syracuse. More than a million dollars has been approved to fix sidewalks in the area.

“We have to take into consideration that we can make the Syracuse campus as accessible as possible, and we are working in that regard,” said Danny Heumann, who works within SU’s department of Campus Planning, Design and Construction.

In what’s being called the Assessable Sidewalk Program, deteriorated and uneven sidewalks and curbs will be replaced in favor of more accessible paths.

Heumann will not only be working with SU and the city to determine which areas need fixing, but he also will benefit greatly himself from the changes. Heumann was left paralyzed after a car accident in 1985.

“I bring a life perspective that people who work within campus planning and designing services just don’t have,” said Heumann. “My goal is to be able to work with them and let them see things through my eyes.”

Though this new plan will improve accessibility for those with physical disabilities, Heumann is quick to point out that this program will benefit all.

The $1.2 million plan that was approved by City Council will be paid for by the city, and will take effect in the 2019-2020 fiscal year.
