SU Women's Ice Hockey Halloween Celebration

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) — Spooky season is in full swing in Central New York.

On Sunday, Syracuse women’s Ice Hockey celebrated Halloween at the Tennity Ice Pavilion. Fans piled in and were welcomed with a panoply of candy options. Marketing intern for the event Joseph Centola, a student at SUNY Oswego, described what the front table at Tennity Ice Pavilion was there for.

“We’re giving out candy, we’re giving out a Halloween coloring book, coloring pages,” Centola said. “You can spin the prize wheel and win pom-poms, necklaces or even drink koozies.”

Fans walked in and were immediately touched by the holiday spirit. The celebrations, though, continued after the game, where Penn State took down Syracuse 6-2. SU players left the ice and sat at a table to sign autographs. Forward Sarah Thompson, who scored in the afternoon contest, had a nice moment while signing autographs.

“It’s really nice. There were actually two little girls who were from my hometown. One of them whose older sister I work within in a mentorship program,” Thompson said. “It was really nice seeing them out there and they were super happy to take pictures. It means a lot to them and their support means a lot to us”

People and fans held smiles on their faces despite the results, and that includes Syracuse University student and hockey Stevie Chuck. Chuck wants to see more of this at SU.

“I loved it. This was my first game here. It was my first time seeing the autographs and stuff,” Chuck said. “I hope it’s kind of implemented with more sports. I think if you could go to a basketball game or even a football game…or be at a soccer game and interact with the players right after, that’s a unique experience.”

The game was two days before Halloween, but the festivities were out in full force.

Ben Spector: It might’ve seemed like an ordinary Fall day at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Fans piled in to watch Syracuse women’s ice hockey, including Otto. SU went up against Penn State and lost 6-2. But it wasn’t entirely about what happened on the ice, but just outside of it.

Spector: So here’s how it worked. Fans walked in , and immediately were allowed to grab candy. Then, the players marched off the ice and signed autographs for all. It put a smile on people’s faces.

Spector: SU fans were happy with the candy given out and the autographs, even with the loss. That includes SU student Stevie Chuck, who wants to see events like this grow.
