SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Syracuse’s first drone racing team practices in The Salty Dungeon, a course that Jeff Grabowsky built with his teammates in his East Syracuse basement.
“It’s never finished,” Grabowsky said, as he continued tinkering with his racing equipment.
Grabowsky founded SaltCtyRacingFPV a year ago after a friend encouraged him to try the sport.
Team pilots like 14-year-old Jonny Exner race their drones around obstacles and checkpoints, trying to record the fastest lap time possible.
“Flying just makes me happy,” Exner said.
In 2019, Exner was ranked 33rd globally, and he was the top-ranked pilot in New York. He won 11 of 21 races he entered.
“It feels good,” he said. “I really like just racing and winning and stuff.”
Exner’s father Jeff enjoys working with his son on their drones and traveling to competitions.
“As a father, I just get to spend so much one on one time with him,” Jeff Exner said. “There have been a lot of things that we probably wouldn’t have done if it wasn’t for drone racing.”
Jeff Exner has fond memories of the first race he entered with his son.
“I hesitated letting Jonny fly, but decided at the last minute to let him fly also,” he said. “He, of course, beat me at that race and has beaten me at every race since then.”
Grabowsky, the Exners and the rest of the SaltCtyRacingFPV team are preparing to head to the first out-of-state meet in team history.
