SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — The City of Syracuse is aiming to transform the East Adams Street neighborhood in Syracuse, also known as the “New 15th Ward”
Syracuse is applying for the Choice Neighborhood Implementation grant, which supports communities that have undergone a comprehensive local planning process and are ready to implement their “Transformation Plan” to redevelop the neighborhood. The grant offers up to $50 million to redevelop public housing.
If approved, 65 percent of the funds would be allocated for neighborhood redevelopment, while the other 35 percent would be given to neighbors who relocate.
Unlike previous revitalization plans, like the construction of I-81 in the 1950s and 60s which perpetuated discrimination and segregation,The New 15th Ward/East Adams Neighborhood Transformation plan is a collaborative effort between community groups.
County Executive Ryan McMahon, part of the Onondaga County’s Housing Initiative Program (O-CHIP) recently handed out a grant of $750,000 for this new plan, which includes Syracuse Housing Authority, the City of Syracuse, McCormack Baron Salazar, and Blueprint 15.
