The City of Syracuse is Facing Chlorine Shortages City of Syracuse Facing Chlorine Shortages

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — A national chlorine shortage is causing the City of Syracuse to close McKinley and Wilson pools for the rest of the summer. Parks and Recreation Commissioner Julie LaFave said it is a problem they have been dealing with all summer.

“Each pool, on average, uses 50 gallons of chlorine a day,” LaFave said. ” When it is hot weather, the water is evaporating, we use up to 100 gallons a day of chlorine.”

LaFave said the supply company the city uses is also facing a driver shortage making it harder for them to get chlorine. The spray features at all of the parks will remain open for the rest of the summer. Ajah  Brown said she has noticed an increase of people at the splash pads with some of the pool’s closing.

“I work at a daycare so we have younger kids and there is only three of us so it is kind of easier to let them run around,” Brown said.

Syracuse will be closing all of its pools by the end of next week as part of its normal summer schedule. The city does not expect any long-term problems to arise because of McKinley Wilson pools closing early this year.
