Syracuse fans of NBC’s “The Office,” heard a change to the iconic theme song on
Thursday night.
When the doors opened at the Oncenter, theater-goers found a musical in place of their favorite workplace comedy.
For one night, the Crouse Hinds Theater hosted “The Office! A Musical Parody,” as a
part of the “Broadway in Syracuse” series. The Dunder Mifflin parody kicked off its North American tour this past summer.
While the musical aspect makes a clear departure from its TV counterpart, the plot of the stage performance stitched together many memorable moments from the over 200 episodes.
Devina Sabnis who played the office customer service representative and routine chatterbox, Kelly Kapoor, described how playwrights, Bob and Tobly McSmith wove pieces from the broadcast show into the script.
“It was written by ‘Office’ fans for ‘Office’ fans,” Sabnis said, adding that “Bob and Tobly did a great job of getting all nine seasons worth of famous moments and from each episode taking things and making them into a cohesive plot.”
While Sabnis re-watched all nine seasons in preparation for her role, she stressed that
audiences should see this performance as freestanding.
“This is a different thing, this is a different experience. Yes, we will comment on the TV show and it’ll be super fun, but take our show for what it is, and don’t compare it too much,” Sabnis said.
