SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – One restaurant on University Hill in Syracuse is nearing its 100th anniversary.
The Varsity has remained a staple for nine decades, and new customers are coming in all the time.
A varsity customer, Joshlyn Carlisle, has been eating at The Varsity every day for the past month. Carlisle has found comfort at The Varsity while her son is in the NICU at a nearby hospital.
“Everyone’s polite here and very welcoming, and it’s just, it kind of gives me a feel for my hometown a little bit, so I like coming here,” said Carlisle.
Carlisle has become a familiar face at the restaurant and is forming closer bonds with the employees.
“The other day I came in and they paid for my food and everything because I’m a regular and I come here all the time. They’re just very polite and compassionate,” said Carlisle. “Then I got to know some of the people in there, and I talk to them frequently when I come in, so it’s just a nice spot to get some conversation sometimes.”
Throughout the years, The Varsity has kept its food at an affordable price. Carlisle appreciates cheaper meals after giving birth to her baby boy.
“I like the prices too. That’s why I come here because, being a postpartum mom and on maternity leave, it takes a while for you to get your maternity pay, so I was kind of broke. So, I was coming here to eat cheap,” said Carlisle.
The Varsity has given this new mom more than a good meal, they have provided her with compassion and camaraderie at this difficult time.
