The Vera House Provides a New Resource New Resource at The Vera House

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)- The Vera House in Syracuse is offering another resource- a web chat. Originally planned to be release much later, The Vera House quickly rolled out the new resource as domestic abuse is on the rise in the U.S.

“What we’re trying to do is really let victims and survivors know that they’re not alone during this time… The Vera House services are available”, explains Christine Benton from The Vera House.

The Vera House has not seen a rise in domestic violence hotline calls, but the calls are increasingly more difficult to handle.

“A lot of people are in very unsafe circumstances right now being held in place with their abuser” says Benton.

In addition to the resources offered by the Vera House, Benton notes a few tips for victims of abuse. Park your car facing the street and unlocked if you need to escape. Always know where your keys are, and keep a “go bag” ready at all times, including important documents, clothing and toiletries.

Benton hopes the chat can help those who cannot speak aloud or if calls are monitored.

The 24-7 line is (315) 468-3260. For more resources, visit verahouse.org.

Christine Benton from The Vera House says those working the hotlines are seeing the impacts of the stay-at-home orders.

Benton: “We have not reported a spike in calls, the calls are more difficult to handle”

Pierce: So, The Vera House is trying something new.

Benton: “What you can do so you don’t have to speak out loud and maybe have your phone call monitored, you can click on a chat with us button, it’s on our website and you’ll be connected with a Vera House advocate”

Pierce: Even with new resources, their message is the same.
