SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — With the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory for the third heatwave of the summer, Syracuse residents should prepare with different ways to stay cool in the heat.
Temperatures this week will reach into the 90s with high humidity as well. Because of this, residents are in danger of experiencing heat exhaustion or even heat stroke.
According to the CDC, an average of 702 heat-related deaths occurred in the United States annually between 2004 to 2018.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion to look out for include general muscle weakness, nausea and vomiting, rapid pulse, and red, hot, and dry skin. If you or someone else experiences these symptoms, try either moving to an air-conditioned place, taking a cold shower or using cold compresses, drinking plenty of fluids, or remove any tight or extra clothing.
Heatstroke differs from heat exhaustion in that it is when the body’s internal temperature is above 104 degrees, as well as experiencing symptoms like headaches, confusion, not sweating, rapid heart rate, nausea or vomiting, or may even lose consciousness.
Residents who experience symptoms of heatstroke should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
