SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS)– CNY is experiencing one of its hottest Octobers on record, with highs landing near and above records of past years.
According to the National Weather Service, the first two weeks of the month have already passed the average temperature record set in 2007, with many days hitting the mid-to-high 70s and lows around 60. With an average high of 62 degrees at this time of year, this week’s forecast of mid-70s highs is a notable shift from recent years.
The unusually warm weather is the result of a dip in a jet stream, pushing warm air into the East and sending colder-than-usual temperatures toward the West.
The coming week will see more high temperatures, with scattered clouds during the day and a chance of overnight showers on Tuesday and Thursday. Monday and Tuesday’s highs of 76 are expected to be the warmest of the week.
Continuing high temperatures could also mean bad news for fans of fall colors; the warmth, combined with moisture from recent rain, has left trees with less sunlight than usual. That means that colors might not be as bright as usual – and they might take longer than usual to reach the peak of their color. That hasn’t stopped CNY residents from celebrating the changes they are seeing in leaves, with the City of Syracuse’s Twitter account sharing photos of fall foliage.
