SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) —A state of emergency was called in Rockland County New York due to an outbreak of the measles. Since October, more than 150 people have been reported with the illness. This is the longest measles outbreak in New York since the disease was officially eliminated from the United States in 2000. How can people stop this? Along with the state of emergency, unvaccinated children have been banned from public places until they receive the MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) vaccine or until the state of emergency ends in 30 days. In Washington, healthcare is back on the table for discussion. President Donald Trump filed a legal papers claiming that Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional on Monday. He then followed up with a tweet saying, “The Republican Party will become ‘The Party of Healthcare!'” This is not the first time President Trump has tried to get rid of the ACA, but he now says he understands healthcare.
Democrats are making moves towards the ACA as well, on a much smaller scale, they want to expand benefits and make slight changes to the legislation. President Trump expects that the decision will fall on the Supreme Court who has upheld the ACA twice before.
Back in Central New York, the opioid crisis continues to cause issues. According to a state quarterly opioid report,
there have been twenty-one overdoses in ten days in Oneida County, five fatal overdoses have been added to the 42 opioid deaths in Oneida and Onondaga County since January of 2018.
In light of this news and his own struggles with addiction, Daniel Baldwin decided to take action. He was frustrated with the lack of treatment options and now plans to open a drug rehabilitation center in Onondaga or Oswego County in the coming year.
